“Child, It is Chilly Exterior” controversy: After ban, radio station informed: “Do not mess with my Christmas music”

Over time, 1944’s “Child, It is Chilly Exterior” has been interpreted by greater than 100 singers. However now it is being reinterpreted by listeners who’re hearing more than just an innocently flirtatious Christmas song, stories CBS Information correspondent Jamie Yuccas. Critics say the lyrics describe a date rape situation.

“I should say, ‘No, no, no, sir’ (Thoughts if I transfer in nearer?)”

“My sister might be suspicious (Gosh your lips look scrumptious)”

“Say what’s on this drink? (No cabs available on the market)”

When San Francisco radio station KOIT began taking part in the music as a part of its Christmas music format, they have been overwhelmed by listener complaints.

“It was a mixture of points. Folks that had been sexually harassed or had been raped, or had kids within the automobile that have been offended by the lyrics,” KOIT program director Brian Figula mentioned.

On Monday, KOIT pulled the tune, becoming a member of different stations in Ohio and Canada.

“The Me Too motion has modified the best way that we take a look at content material and lyrics of songs,” Figula mentioned.

“I am certain that this was not the primary time individuals have listened to ‘Child, It is Chilly Exterior, and thought, ‘Ooh, that sounds slightly coercive,'” mentioned Ange-Marie Hancock Alfaro, chair of the USC gender research division. “However what’s totally different… is that MeToo has truly mentioned… we truly must do one thing about it.”

In keeping with Hancock Alfaro, the present controversy is a part of a rising cultural shift in how some basic songs and movies at the moment are considered.

“Within the period of MeToo I feel what’s actually come up about films like ‘Sixteen Candles’ or ‘The Breakfast Membership’ is, you realize, the relationships between the males and the females, and the methods during which there are type of informal references to assaulting somebody when they’re too drunk to consent,” Hancock Alfaro mentioned.

KOIT is letting listeners resolve whether or not to carry “Child” again. An internet ballot will decide if the music will get iced out for good.

“So what’s been the suggestions because you pulled the music?” Yuccas requested.

“Do not mess with my Christmas music. That is been the suggestions,” Figula mentioned.
