Ceremonial magnificence and ancestral connections: Tiwi Islands artwork and artefacts – in footage | Artwork and design

The artwork of the Tiwi Islands is intimately related with the visible, oral and dance tradition that anchors Tiwi individuals’s identification. From carved memorial sculptures to the intricate painted designs worn throughout ceremonies, Tiwi artwork is a gateway to understanding the depth and great thing about Tiwi tradition. ‘Melbourne is a great distance from the Tiwi Islands,’ says Pedro Wonaeamirri, cultural advisor to Tiwi, an exhibition of artwork and artefacts now exhibiting on the Nationwide Gallery of Victoria. ‘However I like to have the ability to share our tales with others.’

Tiwi is showing at NGV Australia, Federation Square, Melbourne, until 8 March
