Faux attorneys bust for ‘extorting’ money from Joburg lodge to ‘decrease charges invoice’

Two suspects masquerading as attorneys accumulating money owed have been arrested for allegedly making an attempt to extort R67,000 from a Johannesburg lodge to scale back its charges invoice.

The Hawks nabbed the suspects, aged 35 and 43, throughout a sting operation in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu mentioned the pair demanded 1000’s of rand from the lodge in change for a discount of its R323,000 charges invoice. Mulamu mentioned they posed as workers of a legislation agency contracted by the Metropolis of Johannesburg.

They appeared within the Hillbrow Justice of the Peace’s courtroom on Friday on corruption and extortion fees.

“Additional investigation revealed that the suspects, who launched themselves as Ncube Included Attorneys workers contracted by Metropolis of Johannesburg to gather debt owed by its prospects, demanded … compensation to be able to cut back the utility invoice once more to R12,000,” mentioned Mulamu.

“The Hawks’ critical corruption investigation [team] in Germiston and Johannesburg carried out a sting operation at a restaurant in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Thursday. The suspects have been instantly arrested in possession of R10,000 in money.”
