‘Ongoing tobacco ban will flip casual merchants into beggars, criminals into billionaires’

The SA Casual Merchants Alliance (Saita) has referred to as on the federal government to carry the ban on cigarette gross sales below degree three of the lockdown, warning continued ban till degree 1 will put casual merchants on the streets.

The alliance, the nationwide voice of casual commerce in SA, added that an ongoing ban would add to authorities’s already huge social grant burden and switch “reputable casual merchants into beggars and illicit tobacco sellers into billionaires”.

Cigarette gross sales make up a sizeable portion of the common casual merchants’ gross sales, and in lots of circumstances, 100% of gross sales. Banning cigarettes would put tens of millions of South Africans in danger, and rob them of their dignity, it mentioned.
